Who we are
S.T.A.R. (Stand Together And Recover) is Arizona’s first peer-run mental health recovery agency, providing support for individuals living with a serious mental illness (SMI). We help people live the life they love by focusing on connection, skill-building, and recovery through shared lived experience.
Our Mission
To help individuals live the life they love and encourage them to reach their full potential by providing the tools to gain employment, enhance social connection, and improve overall wellness.
Our History
S.T.A.R. began in 1985 when four individuals were discharged from Maricopa Medical Center’s Psychiatric Annex. They came together to support one another and help others transition out of psychiatric care — offering peer support, education, and companionship to reduce the risk of readmission.
By 1987, S.T.A.R. became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the first peer recovery agency in Arizona. What started as a small support group meeting twice a week has grown into a multi-site organization with four program locations, operating nearly 60 hours each week and serving over 500 individuals annually.
Our Values:
S – Supporting Others

T – Teamwork & Collaboration

A – Accountability

R – Results
